Grapefruit & Spoon

The photo searching was coming up short, so I went into my kitchen for some inspiration. When I cut into this grapefruit and saw the deep red interior, I knew this was it. Grabbed a few dishes and set up a still life that appealed to me. :)

Pomegranate

Thrilled to say the pomegranates are showing up in the stores again. When I first switched from palette knife to brush, I had the idea to challenge myself with painting the pomegranate seeds--see the painting here. No idea what I was thinking, but I was so proud of that at the time, although there is a lot I would do differently now. This one was somehow just as challenging!

Pomegranate

Pomegranates are definitely one of my favorite fruits and something I've been wanting to paint for a long time. I had just finished up a few Christmas commissions, and finally got up the courage to give it a try. Couldn't be happier with the way this came together--it looks good enough to eat! I was able to use the palette knife a bit in the finishing and think it gave some great depth to the painting.

The First Ripe Raspberry

Took this photo about two weeks ago and loved it! I never in a million years thought I would attempt to paint this with the palette knife. It was a complete experiment, so I decided to underpaint with the brush so that I could establish all of the shadows and "stuff" behind the subject. This proved to be very helpful and mind you, this is the second time I've used a brush in at least a year!

It was really fun and at one point I questioned introducing the knife at all... Then, just as I said to my husband that I wasn't sure how far to take it with the brush, the brush broke! I completely believe in signs, so decided that was a pretty good time to stop. (Kind of like when I've been on the computer for too long and the iPad just turns off...)

I'm so glad I pushed myself and did some playing because I love the way the painting turned out. Let me know what you think!
