Measuring Up

Ever have those days when you just need a good challenge? Me too. :) These stainless measuring cups and patterned fabric provided it! One trick was keeping the oranges and blues separate, but also keeping the pattern loose. Also really love the lost edge on the shadow side of the cups. The front of the cups also provided a perfect example of painting what I saw--the reflection.

For My Salsa

We only had one tomato plant this year and it didn't do very well. Luckily my mom had many varieties of plants producing and was more than willing to share. Many amazing batches of salsa were made this summer! Is there anything as delicious as summer tomatoes?

Red Boat

Carver's Rock

Found lots of photos from one of our favorite hiking spots, Carver's Rock. Used to hike there with my dad when I was young, and now my husband and I take our boys. Quite beautiful and full of memories, old and new.

Table Shuffleboard

My husband and I stopped at this cool bar for lunch while driving through Indiana. We saw this shiny long game table with the light reflecting onto it so beautifully. We just had to check it out.

The game itself is definitely not as easy to play as it looks--that board is quite slippery!

Autumn at the Lake

Heading home from Minnesota, my husband and I passed Lake Pepin again in the early morning. As we drove past my jaw dropped in awe; my sweet husband stopped the car. The lake looked just like a mirror, reflecting the many glowing boats and all the color in the trees. Seems we happened past at the perfect moment, as everything was completely still and quiet.

Brick Layer?

This is such an exciting piece for me--one of those I may have to hang on my own wall to remember as a fond learning experience. There was a lesson in looseness here; this time in the form of bricks. I had spent nearly two hours painstakingly laying in the bricks on the right wall, and nearly finished, decided they had to go. So I scraped them off (another perk to using oils, and a knife!) and just went for it as you see here. Instead of all the detail, I tried to focus on the shapes and forms.

Another thing that I was happy with was the depth that was created in the space above the door and for the window. The bars were intimidating, but so worth it in the end! All in all, this painting was so much fun to create and I had a "just go for it" attitude, which is very freeing. This painting was also done with a limited palette, which has really helped me find good color harmony in each piece. Thanks for visiting--I hope you enjoy it!
