Red-bellied Woodpecker
This handsome guy is out on our trees or suet every day--at least I think it's the same one! We have a few different varieties that come into our yard pretty regularly. This one is my favorite though.

Poppies with Stripes
You must know by now that I love stripes. Also LOVE poppies. This was painted loose as can be with palette knife. Stripes and loose seem like opposites, don't they?!

Garden Chicken
Took this amazing photo of a mama chicken at the Northwind Perennial Gardens and have been looking at it for almost two years now. I wanted to try painting it, but was so intimidated by the intricate details on the bird; it was a challenge! Started with the brush on black, but needed to brighten up the feathers. In the end I'm really glad I introduced the palette knife because of the texture it added.

Anemones with Stripes
Really feeling this painting--the black with gold--so dramatic with these light and airy flowers.
Purchased a tube of Williamsburg gold while bumming around in Milwaukee with my husband a few weeks ago. I had no idea oils came in gold! When I took pregnancy leave from oils and was using acrylics, gold was my thing! I'm just beyond thrilled to have it on my palette again.

Macy the English Sheepdog
It is so interesting to hear about artists and their preferences regarding phases of paintings. I am definitely someone who loves the beginning when things are just taking shape and then the end when it all comes together. The messy middle phase always freaks me out a little!
Macy was done as a Christmas commission gifted early. She was started with brush and I had a great soft look going, but in the end the need for thick and shiny won out. On live the palette knife! :)

Grapefruit
It's cold here in Wisconsin--snow and below zero temperatures already in mid-November. I thought I'd do a little fruit series, but have only felt passionately about painting the pomegranate and this grapefruit so far. I wait anxiously all year for these two fruits to be at their peek. They help make this cold time of year so much more enjoyable!

A New Journey
This painting was a commissioned piece done for a friend who just moved to a new city. It's always tough to leave that first home. I hope this will be a treasured keepsake, a painting of the house where their babies were born.

Low Rider
After painting the last blue car so loosely with the knife, I thought I'd try first drawing, then painting this car as I normally would. I like this painting, but it's not as exciting to me as the first one. The other was a photo I worked hard to capture of a moving vehicle with a story to tell, where this one was a photo of a parked car. Could be the colors, or the looseness of the previous painting...
I'm going to try and paint some more car images--I do love a cool car!

Going Paddle Boarding
I must have looked quite foolish snapping photos of this awesome car and board while on the interstate. You'll be happy to know I was the passenger (not the driver!) moving from front seat into the back to get a shot. I liked this view as it seemed to have movement.
As an interesting side note, this is the first painting I've done (with the knives) where I haven't drawn or sketched the image onto the panel first. I often just jump right in while using the brushes, so I thought I'd see how it would go. Better than I thought--definitely looser!

Light From Darkness
Elephants have always been one of my favorite things to paint. They are such large and peaceful animals that represent strength, good fortune, wisdom, patience, family, and society. I love how in this one, it seems to be light coming out of the darkness.
