Not a Goddess

I have been studying the history of some of my favorite artists--first saw Manet's work years ago at an amazing exhibit at The Art Institute of Chicago. My goal is to go back and study many of these artists who were so strongly influenced by each other. It has been a lot of fun so far and extremely motivating!

This painting was inspired by Edouard Manet's painting "The Luncheon on the Grass" (without the foreground). Manet was not dependent on the sales of his paintings, so was able to really push the boundaries of the time. Initially, I just thought she was really beautiful, but learning the stories behind paintings makes them so much better!

The process I used to paint this was different. Normally I sketch in my painting with light transparent paint, but this time I did a dark wash and wiped out the woman's form. It was interesting and felt strange, forcing an uncomfortable looseness.

Aslan

This beautiful yellow lab was done as a Christmas commission. The photo it was painted from was almost sepia. I tried to keep the gray/fogginess to the painting, and really love the outcome.

Late Bloomers

These are some late bloomers from my garden, including cosmos, black-eyed-susan, and some perennial alliums.

Sausalito Sailboat

One of my inspirations from Sausalito, California. It was a sunny beautiful day, so we were drawn to the piers. Sat outside right on the water and had some fish and ceviche at Fish, a fun spot and delicious lunch.

Hadn't painted in a week and I had a great time with this.

Red Boat

Love the red colors and great reflection. Looks like the perfect little boat to do some fishing.

Carver's Rock

Found lots of photos from one of our favorite hiking spots, Carver's Rock. Used to hike there with my dad when I was young, and now my husband and I take our boys. Quite beautiful and full of memories, old and new.

Vacay

I know what you're thinking and you're right. There should definitely be a table to rest your drink on.

Autumn at the Lake

Heading home from Minnesota, my husband and I passed Lake Pepin again in the early morning. As we drove past my jaw dropped in awe; my sweet husband stopped the car. The lake looked just like a mirror, reflecting the many glowing boats and all the color in the trees. Seems we happened past at the perfect moment, as everything was completely still and quiet.

All Aglow

It's been a tough past few days and so I was having some trouble getting excited about what to paint. Decided to use this old photo that I love. It ended up feeling like if one were to do some self-therapy and love of the child within. This little girl is all aglow and completely in her element--sunshine, water... nature in general, a light heart and sweet spirit.

Tiny Turtle

Well I certainly never expected to have a live model for this one as I live no where near water or swamp... However, my neighbor brought this turtle over and asked if I wanted it to show to the boys; he had found it in his garden. Of course I did! :) He thought maybe it was a snapping turtle, but I clearly am no turtle expert so looked online. Sure seems to be--and these things grow to be very large.

Flamingo

This flamingo was so much fun to paint, just nice and easy and loose. I tried to keep the edges soft and didn't get too hung up on the water. Couldn't be happier with the shadows and the legs. Kinda wish it was me walking on the beach in the sunshine right about now!

Thought I'd share this site I came across too:

Canoeing the Wisconsin River

My family and I went canoeing with some friends on the Wisconsin River a few weeks ago. I kept trying to capture a photo of our canoes every time we stopped because I thought it would make a great painting. I'm so happy with the way it turned out and treasure the fun memories we made that day.

Albatross

Here is another San Francisco painting, this one was given to me courtesy of my sister. She captured such an amazing image of an albatross with the most beautiful golden sunlight on it. It looks so large and proud, enjoying the morning sunrise.

Quality Time

Here is the fifth and final Christmas commission called "Quality Time". I had multiple images to choose from, and so was able to get some interesting light on the boat and also some beautiful clouds. Having options makes commissions even better!

Such an amazing way for two boys to enjoy spending time with their dad.
